Tom grew up in Astoria, Queens, the youngest of ten children. He earned a BBA in Marketing from St. John’s University in New York, NY, and an MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ.
He is predeceased by his loving wife Mary Ellen McDonald (Deignan) of 59 years. Tom and Mary met at St. John’s University, and were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Jackson Heights, NY in October of 1960. They lived and made loving homes in Franklin Square, NY, Dix Hills, NY, West Milford, NJ, and Simsbury, CT.
Tom enlisted in the Marine Corps reserves during college, completing boot camp at Parris Island, SC, and completing basic training at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina while starting his career and family.
Tom was a sales executive in the electrical industry, with positions at Graybar Electric, Honeywell, Inc., General Electric, and Crouse Hinds Co. before rising to Executive Vice President of International Sales at O.Z./Gedney Co. in Terryville, CT. During this time he was also President of the National Association of Electrical Distributors, and with Mary, hosted industry events across the US.
Tom loved spending time with his family, including his four grandchildren. He enjoyed retirement in Vero Beach, FL and Bluffton, SC; he was an avid tennis player and loved the beach. Tom also enjoyed cooking, Big Band music, classical music and watching a golf tournament with a nice glass of scotch. Tom and Mary gathered special memories while traveling in Ireland, England, Austria and Italy.
Tom is survived by his daughter Marianne Thompson and her husband Bruce of Concord, MA, his son Christopher McDonald of Greenwich, CT, his son David McDonald and his wife Tara of Needham, MA, his daughter Katherine Finn and her husband Jim of New York, NY and his four grandchildren: Dylan Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Thomas McDonald and Caetlyn McDonald.
Funeral Mass at New Horizons, 400 Hemenway St. Marlborough, MA, on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 10AM. Visitation in the Duckett Funeral Home of J.S. Waterman & Sons, 656 Boston Post Rd. Sudbury, MA, on Sunday, May 14, 2023 from 3PM - 6PM.
