Robert was born in Wharton, TX, the son of Robert Francis and June Marie (Kenny) O’Brien. As the son of a civil engineer, he grew up overseas, going to the local schools and learning several languages. He lived with his family in Holland, France, Belgium and Italy.
Robert moved to Sudbury in 1973 and graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School with the class of 1975. He graduated from American University in Washington, D. C., in 1979 and went on to develop an illustrious career in the U.S. Army. He served with various units, including the 101st Airborne Division and later with Army Intelligence. He served with particular distinction in the Gulf War, where he was twice decorated for bravery under Combat and received the Bronze Star with a “V” for valor. He was a retired Army Major, and has lived in Maynard for the past three years.
Robert is survived by a son, Cullen R. O’Brien of Washington, D. C., a daughter , Alexia K. O’Brien of Charlotte, NC, both children of Therese M. Boucher (O’Brien) of Woodstock, MD; a brother, John K. O’Brien of Sudbury, and a sister, Candace A. O’Brien of Waltham. Affectionately known as Rob by a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours, he was a familiar sight when out walking his two dogs Beau and Bambi, both in Maynard and Sudbury. . He is remembered for his humor, his bravery, his strength, and his unwavering love and compassion for all living things.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday July 16 ,at 5PM at the Duckett – J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Sudbury.
Calling hours will precede the service from 3PM to 5PM.
Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be private.
