Father, husband, brother and friend
Robert W. Landry. Age 59, was a loving father to Ben and Rob, husband to Peg, brother to his seven sisters and his brother and a great friend to many, many people. He was a bonus dad to so many of his sons' friends. While we can't acknowledge them all, many are here today and they know who they are. He was passionate about many things, first and foremost his family. He enjoyed a range of hobbies that included sailing, soccer, photography, birding and music. He also cornered the market on corny jokes. He had a keen eye for the beauty in nature as captured through his photographs that were proudly displayed and shared with family and friends.
Rob was a leader in the Sudbury community, as the president of the Sudbury Youth Soccer for many years even beyond his own boys participation. He was a talented coach of soccer and basketball and introduced many young people to his passion for the sports. His calm, soothing style and his nurturing manner and his unique way of coaxing young people into doing their best was legendary. He was a champion of good sportsmanship and instilled that in his players. Many a refrigerator door in Sudbury have pictures of Rob's teams that he coached and pictures of trophies that Rob awarded.
Additionally, he too, was an avid soccer player who could rough house with the best of them. The Over the Hill Soccer League was his Sunday ritual. He played on many teams over the years- the Blast, the Over 50, the Sudbury AC and the Sudbury Gold. The team had many bumps and bruises to show for their aggressive play and their unyielding style. Like many of his teammates he was a regular at the local emergency rooms with shoulder, knee, foot, hand and all sorts of injuries. None of these stopped them from continuous play, year after year. Rob's tolerance for pain was a running joke among many except for the time when he separated his shoulder. His teammates were alarmed when they heard the language spewing from him.
His friends remember his ready smile, his piercing blue eyes that always had a twinkle on the edge of mischief. He had a repertoire of corny jokes that had a way of evoking groans and laughter. There are many "bad Dad jokes" to go around for a long, long time.
Rob was a practicing lawyer for over 30 years, most of them in Sudbury, representing a wide range of clients. He graduated from University of Massachusetts, Amherst and New England School of Law, cum laude. A native of Massachusetts he grew up in Medford and spent his summers in Hull. The Landry family included seven girls and two boys. Rob was in the middle of the clan.
Many of his friends have expressed how much they valued his friendship, his support and his always being their for them. They remember the little things that he did to make their lives more fulfilling. He would lighten a tough situation and provide comfort to all who needed his support. Many refer to him as a brother and a friend as well as a second father to the wide circle of his sons' friends.
While we mourn his loss we celebrate his life that was full and energetic to the very end.
