Richard Roy Hawes , formerly of Sudbury and Marstons Mills, died at South County Hospital in Wakefield, RI, Sunday, September 22, 2013 following a brief illness. He was 86 and the husband of the late Alice McGovern Hawes. Born in Concord and raised and educated in Sudbury, he was the son of the late Leon Roy and Margaret Morrison Hawes. Following graduation from Sudbury high School in 1946 Mr. Hawes joined the United States Navy and served at the close of World War II. He returned to Sudbury; married in 1950, and joined the Sudbury Police Force for 10 years prior to changing employment to the Sudbury Fire Department. He retired as Captain following 25 years of service. He moved to Marstons Mills in 1985 and later to South Kingston, RI in 2005. In retirement he enjoyed travel, gardening and time spent at oceanside. He is survived by six children: Kathleen Hawes of Wrentham; Marcia Swenson and her husband, Richard, of Bellingham; Betsy Mele of Newport, RI; Richard Hawes and his wife, Donna, of Marlboro, VT; Jennifer H. Michels and her husband, Stephen, of Hudson; and Deborah Davin of Townsend. He was the brother of Jean Carroll of CA, David Hawes of NY and the late Donald Hawes. He also leaves 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 10:00 am at Sudbury United Methodist Church, 251 Old Sudbury Road, Rt. 27, Sudbury Center. Visitation will be Thurs., Sept 26, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Duckett-J.S.Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd., Rt. 20, Sudbury.
