Age 79, of Chestnut Hill, MA, passed away June 21, 2011 at his home. He was born and raised in Fremont, Ohio, to the late Ralph and Ruby (Garn) Engle. Ralph was predeceased by his wife Corliss Knapp Engle and his sister Alice.
Ralph achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boys’ Club of America, and graduated from Fremont Ross High School in Ohio. He continued his education and received an A.B. degree from Case Western Reserve University, and a M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School, where he later held academic appointments.
Ralph had a long and distinguished career as a psychoanalyst. Besides helping his own patients through his practice, Ralph held numerous leadership positions in professional societies and contributed much of his time to the field of psychoanalysis.
Ralph leaves behind two sons, Ralph P. Engle III (Phil) and his wife Mary Biscaldi Engle of Rye, NH, Arthur K. Engle (Arkie) and his wife Randie of Pittsburgh, PA, and their children Noa, Aliza, Yonah, Estie, Aron, and Menachem. He also leaves his cousin and dear friend Philip Purdom and his wife Jennifer of Salt Lake City, UT, brother-in-law George Marvin-Smith and his wife Lisa of Madison, CT and their children, Gregory and his wife Bridget, Andrew and Elizabeth. Also surviving are dear long-time friends Dr. Gary Gross and his wife Betsy Shure Gross of Brookline, MA, and their children Liza Draper Seaman and her husband Richard of Claremont, NH and their children, and Andrew Gross Gaitán and his wife Maritza of West Sacramento, CA and their children.
Burial will take place on Sunday, July 10, 2011 in Walnut Hills Cemetery in Brookline, MA at 12 noon, followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 pm at The Country Club, 191 Clyde St., Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Corliss Knapp Engle Scholarship, c/o The Garden Club of America, 14 East 60th St., 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10022.
