Born in Pittsfield, Maine, on March 1, 1930, she was the daughter of Foster and Velma (Noble) White. Loretta was raised and educated in Maine, a proud graduate of the Maine Central Institute class of 1948. She was class Valedictorian, active in Senior Class play, council, Glee Club, sports including field hockey, and voted “Most Likely to Succeed”. She went on to study mathematics at the University of Maine, where she met her beloved husband, Edwin Knights Thomas, with whom she shared nearly 70 years of marriage.
Mrs. Thomas moved to Waltham, Massachusetts, in the early 1950s, before settling in Sudbury in 1953. She worked as a lunch aide in the Sudbury school system for fifteen years. Mrs. Thomas was a dedicated member of the Memorial Congregational Church and served as past Treasurer of the preschool. She was a generous and intelligent woman and donated countless hours to her community, from recycling programs and the annual Messiah Sing at the church, to hosting educational courses at the Senior Center.
Beloved and devoted mother of Mark Thomas and his wife Karen of Hull, Peter Thomas and his wife Anita of Boylston, John Thomas and his wife Karen Dalton-Thomas of Wayland; cherished sister of Hattie Hannigen of Andover; loving grandmother of the late Lindsay Thomas, Layla Preston and her husband Robert of Middleborogh, Matthew Thomas of Boston, Erica Thomas of Marlborough; proud great-grandmother of Ella and Alia Preston both of Middleborough, Arlo Thomas of Marlborough.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 11:00 am at the Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury.
