Judy Julianna Teubel, of Sudbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2017 from complications of Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Teubel-Thaler of North Palm Beach, FL and her son, Peter Teubel of Fitzwilliam, NH. She also has family in Hungary, including her last surviving sister, Katalin Dohány in Miskolc.
Judy was born on December 21, 1932 in Hungary and grew up in Miskolc, the second youngest of seven siblings. With a natural talent for athletics, she was recruited for the state handball and skiing teams. However, during the brief Hungarian Revolution of 1956, she jumped at the opportunity (the sole person in her family) to immigrate to Canada. She worked in Toronto, and later met and married George Dietrich Teubel in 1961, also a European immigrant (from Germany); they had two children before moving to Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1969.
She was a life-long learner, completing her GED, taking college classes, and even auditing language and industrial arts classes at the local high school. Life was good for the upwardly mobile young family until George was stricken with brain cancer in 1975. He survived many surgeries and ensuing handicaps for over 20 years. It was Judy’s determination that kept her husband and children motivated to overcome this adversity and thrive. She worked as a bookkeeper and nursed her husband through each surgery and rehabilitation while raising her children, various pets, and still managed to become an amazing cook.
George passed away in early 1997, and Judy, always an avid gardener, became more involved with the Sudbury Garden Club. She also was a member of an investment club and volunteered at the Sudbury Senior Center. Always an animal lover, she had several beloved dachshund companions over the years.
Eventually, she was able to spend many precious quality years with her children, dividing her time between New Hampshire and Florida.
Her children were with her in her final days, and she passed peacefully with no pain. Her strength, energy, spirited nature and laughter will always be remembered.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 from 5-7 pm at the Duckett-J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd, Sudbury, MA 01776. Burial will be private.
