With profound sadness, we announce the passing of James William Gish, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully in his sleep on October 19, 2023, following a courageous battle with Glioblastoma.
Born in Wilmington, DE, to Samuel and Mary Gish (née Moody) on October 30, 1950, James – or "Jim," as many knew him – was a beacon of intellect, wit, and passion. He was an alumnus of Shortledge Elementary School, Warner Jr High, and P.S. DuPont High School. Jim furthered his education at the University of Delaware, diving into computer science and statistics, before obtaining his Master's in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His academic pursuits paved the way for a remarkable career in computer science and database software applications, a field in which he dedicated his entire professional life. Jim's work was more than a job; it was a testament to his perpetual desire to understand and innovate.
Jim's life was not all work; he had an insatiable passion for photography, woodworking, and culinary arts. He was a maestro in the kitchen, an artisan in the workshop, and a keen eye behind the lens. Music, however, was Jim's soul's true expression. He found solace and joy in the keys of his piano, transitioning from classical compositions to the free-spirited melodies of jazz in his later years. His musical journey was enriched by his times at jazz camps and the performances he gave at First Parish, touching countless hearts in his community.
A man of nature, humor, and intellect, Jim brightened the world with his infectious laugh and impeccable wit. A master of puns, he never hesitated to share a quip or offer candid thoughts. His sharp mind and a heart full of love left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him.
Jim's most cherished accomplishment was his loving family. He met his wife, Kristina, in Madison, WI, setting the cornerstone for a beautiful life journey that took them from Wisconsin to Texas and eventually to Massachusetts. They welcomed their children: Rebecca in 1989 and Alexander in 1993. Jim's legacy of love grew with Alexander's marriage to Rachel in 2019 and again with the birth of his adored grandson, Anthony, in 2021.
While we mourn the loss of a remarkable man, we also celebrate the rich legacy he leaves behind. A celebration of Jim's life is planned for spring 2024; those wishing to join can contact the family for further details.
In remembrance of James and his love for nature, the family kindly suggests that any memorial contributions be directed to the New England Botanical Garden at Tower Hill, or Mass Audubon, an ode to his lifelong appreciation for the natural world.
Jim's passing leaves a void that words cannot fill. Yet, his spirit, boundless love, and memories remain eternally in our hearts. Rest in peace, Jim, until we meet again.
