Eric S. Lind, age 84, of Sudbury MA passed away peacefully from complications of ALS on September 25, 2022 surrounded by family. He was deeply loved, respected, and admired by all who encountered him. He was dedicated to his family and full of wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
Born in 1938, he was raised on a farm in Norfolk Massachusetts by Esther Mae Crosby and Ernest Vincent Lind. He attended Walpole High School and Acadia University in Nova Scotia graduating with a Bachelor's of Science in chemistry in 1960. He taught science at Monson Academy in MA. He later worked for the WR Grace Company, as a chemist, researcher and customer service manager, a role which he held for 39 years retiring in 2001.
He was an activist for the planet and held deep knowledge of the land, its history and the plants and animals in the area. He was a dedicated member of Sustainable Sudbury and served on the Sudbury Conservation Commission. Sixty-four acres of his family’s “Lind Farm” in Norfolk, MA became conservation land in 1998. He loved sharing his knowledge walking with his children and grandchildren through the New England woods, the Cape Cod bog, and on favorite bike rides in the area.
He believed in volunteering and helping others. Through the Sudbury United Methodist Church he served as a Stephen Minister, a member of the Social Justice Commission and volunteered for the prison ministry for 15 years teaching a photography lab for youth that were incarcerated. He volunteered with the Sudbury Senior Center in the “Mr. Fix-it” program. He provided nature education activities for children through the Urban Education Program at the Assabet and Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge, sharing his love of nature.
He considered himself a “Self-propelled enthusiast” enjoying biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking and in the winter skating and skiing. After being diagnosed with ALS 18 months ago, he demonstrated determination, love of the outdoors and his willful embrace of life. He never gave up his joy of riding his bike, never stopped exercising, never stopped defending and admiring nature.
He is survived by his wife Jean of 55 years, his children Kevin (his wife Amy), Stephanie, and Heather (her husband Olaf), and his 5 grandchildren Sophia, Oliver, Boden, Lukas and Lulu. He also leaves behind his siblings, Peter, Dave, and Robin and so many other beloved family members and friends.
He will be deeply missed.
A service will be held on Saturday, October 15th at 2:00PM at the Sudbury United Methodist Church, 251 Old Sudbury Rd., Sudbury MA.
