Age 71, of Upton, Massachusetts, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, Massachusetts after fighting a rare autoimmune condition, Dermatomyositis, for most of 2022. He was the son to the late Leroy and Barbara (Thompson) Murray. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Lynn (Thompson) Murray, previously of Buffalo, New York, years, his three children: Christopher Lee Murray of Boston, Bradford Thompson Murray of Warwick, Rhode Island and Alison Price Murray of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dan has two adorable grandsons, Liam Daniel and Finley Michael. Dan and Lynn met when they were both in graduate school in Boston. They were smitten with one another immediately. Once married, Dan and Lynn enjoyed traveling together, time with family and good friends, successful careers and raising their three wonderful children who continue to miss their Dad tremendously.
Daniel was larger than life. When entering a room, he would light it up. People always gravitated toward Dan because of his magnanimous personality, knowledge of trivia, love of history, and quick wit. Daniel was a graduate of Suffolk University Law School and became a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association in 1980. His first position as an attorney was with Ticor Title Insurance where he underwrote titles for some of Boston’s largest commercial properties. From there, he practiced law with Budd, Wiley and Richelin where he began specializing in Residential Real Estate Law. Eventually, Dan opened his own practice, Law Offices of Daniel W Murray, in Boston. Several years later he relocated his practice to Wellesley, Massachusetts and became a well-known, sought after Residential Real Estate Attorney. When his oldest son, Christopher, also became a member of the Mass Bar, Dan and his son became law partners. Dan relocated the office to Sudbury, Massachusetts, close to home in Sudbury. Christopher is following in his Dad’s footsteps to continue the legacy.
Dan was very proud when his son, Brad, enlisted in the United States Army in 2008 as a member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry, based out of Ft Hood, Texas. He attended Brad’s graduation from Basic Training at Ft. Sill and on a hot, humid Oklahoma morning, decided to join a 5k Battalion run wearing a pair of Sperry Topsiders – because, of course, he forgot to pack his running shoes! The troops that Dan ran with kept encouraging him to “keep going”….even the Colonel kept shouting at him saying, “let’s go Old Man”!
Dan loved attending his daughter’s various sports activities; he moved his office to Sudbury so that he could attend every game. Dan was so proud of Alison as she graduated with honors from Pennsylvania State University majoring in Finance. Attending Penn State football games while Alison was a student was a huge thrill.
Dan enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime: he was the biggest Red Sox fan – he followed them since the young age of 4 and knew every statistic as an adult! His love for baseball didn’t preclude his love of the Celtics and our beloved Patriots. Golf, racquetball, bridge, cribbage, and travel were other activities he also enjoyed. Dan was a voracious reader with a love of historical non-fiction. His knowledge of history was extraordinary. Just ask him to name all the U.S. Presidents, in order ….. not a problem for Dan.
While Dan’s parents have passed, Dan has a sister, Lisbeth Murray Miller of Winchester, New Hampshire, a brother who he shares a birthday with (one year apart), Steven Foster Murray of Salem, Massachusetts, and Matthew Murray of Billerica, Massachusetts.
A service honoring Dan’s life will be held in the Duckett - J.S. Waterman and Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776 on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 10:30 AM. All who knew and loved Dan are welcome to attend.
Donations in loving memory of Dan may be sent to The Myositis Association, www.myositis.org.
