Ann-Penn Holton

She was born in New Britain, Connecticut, April 22, 1925, the only child of Fred M. and Laura Penn Stearns. She graduated from St. Mary’s (Episcopal) School in Peekskill, New York, and Wheelock College in Boston. She also did graduate work in psychology at Trinity College in Hartford.

She taught kindergarten at schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Delaware but devoted her life to raising her three children. In 1957, she and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which she was active in many callings, including teaching Sunday School, and literature classes in the women’s organization of the Church.

She was the organizer and first President of the Junior Women’s Club in Newington, Connecticut; President of the Alumnae Council at Wheelock College and Chairman of the Endowment Fund; and Regent of the Lucy Jackson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her interest in the DAR stemmed from her life-long interest in genealogy, and she was proud to be descended from Charles Stearns, who arrived on the Arbella, the flagship of the Winthrop Fleet, in 1630.

Other avocations were reading, handiwork, art, and volunteering in local nursing homes. Her last ten years were spent in a retirement community where she uplifted those who needed a friend.

A resident of Waban, Mass., for close to 50 years, she was predeceased by her husband, Frederick D. Holton. She is survived by two sons, Frederick S. Holton of Boston, and Randall L. Holton of Dedham, Mass.; a daughter, Ann Holton Jenne of Newcastle, Maine; two daughters-in-law, Farnell C. Holton and Tanya M. Holton; a son-in-law, Kirk Q. Jenne; and two granddaughters, Wiley P.S. Holton and Julia W. Holton.
