Robert Lewis Guerard, 83, passed away at home under Hospice care after a lengthy illness on Friday, June 24, 2016. Bob was born on January 5, 1933, in East Orange, NJ, the elder son of Joseph Paul Guerard and Hazel Lewis Guerard. He grew up in North Plainfield, NJ, graduating from North Plainfield High School, Class of 1951. Immediately upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Bob was a Korean War veteran having proudly served his country from 1951-1955. Bob was an expert in engine maintenance repair and taught airplane engine maintenance at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, before being reassigned to Japan and Korea, where he was a member of the Kyushu Gypsy Squadron. Bob was a member of the Lions Club in New Jersey and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bob began his telephone company career in 1955, working first for New Jersey Bell, then Bell Atlantic, and finally retiring from Verizon as an Engineer in 1989. During his career, he was often loaned to Bellcore to teach telephone switching equipment maintenance courses or to troubleshoot switching equipment problems around the country for other telephone companies. After retirement, he worked in maintenance at Red Roof Inns in New Jersey prior to relocating to Great Falls, VA where he worked for Residence Inn by Marriott. Bob was a very kind and generous man who always volunteered his time and talents. While living in New Jersey, he was a volunteer for many years with the Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad. He also was very involved with Junior Achievement. In Virginia, he volunteered at Reston, Virginia Hospital. After relocating to Florida in 2000, he continued his volunteer work. He was Secretary of Snug Harbor Yacht Club, and volunteered at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department, and had over 2,000 hours of service with Martin Health Auxiliary. Bob cherished his family. He and his loving wife celebrated 45 years of marriage in May 2016. Bob enjoyed collecting miniature lighthouses, airplanes, especially DC-3s, motorcycles, traveling the world, and truly loved his pride of 9 cats, whom he doted on; especially, Cheyenne, Suzie, Andy and Callie.
He is predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Douglas A. Guerard. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 45 years, Shelley (Elaine M.) Sprague Guerard; son, Scott Guerard and wife, Karen, and grandson, Andrew Guerard, of Holiday, FL, and sister-in-law, Mary Dominica Guerard of SC, and several nephews. He will be greatly missed by his many dear friends, neighbors, and family.
The family would like to thank special caregivers Sonya Masters and Holonne Jean from Family Private Care for their compassionate and loving care of Bob and for their support of the family.
The family would also like to thank Hospice for their outstanding care and support during Bob’s final journey.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart, FL with a service with military honors at 5:00 pm. Burial will be at Queen of Peace Cemetery in West Palm Beach, FL at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 30, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bob’s name to Domino’s House, A No Kill Cat Shelter, 4546 SW Honey Terrace, Palm City, FL 34990.
