Peggy was born to Dr. Thure and Marta Peterson on May 9th,1929, in Montclair, New Jersey. She was married to Dr. Bruce Merritt, DC in 1950, and maintained residency in Wayne, New Jersey, where they raised their six children. In 1979, Peggy, Bruce, and their youngest twin sons made the move to Hobe Sound, Florida to pursue a life of beach, boating, and year-round warm weather. Peggy was a successful Realtor for more than 30 years in Martin County, spending the majority of those years with Horizon Properties in Hobe Sound. As a Realtor, she met and befriended many of the residents of Hobe Sound, sharing her generous and optimistic outlook on life. Peggy had a passion for the outdoors, sharing time with her friends and family, and a contagious sense of humor. She was a tireless volunteer for the Rotary, the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce, the Unity Church of Stuart, and Martin County schools. Peggy loved to start her day with a walk on the beach, end her day with a bowl of ice cream.
Peggy’s family legacy is deep-rooted in the heart of Chiropractic for more than 93 years. Her father, Thure, was the Executive Director of the Chiropractic Institute of NY, and the first chiropractor in her life. He was not the last, however, as Peggy’s husband, two brother-in-laws, three children, one nephew, three grandchildren and one grandson-in-law are all chiropractors. She was proud to have taught the family how to be true to their philosophy and live a natural, healthy life.
As for the Merritt clan, they all agree, Peggy was the Matriarch of the Family. While predeceased in death by her husband, Bruce Merritt DC, son Jeffrey Merritt, son Robert Merritt, and sister June (Peterson) Montgomery, she leaves behind many loved ones, including her son Glenn Merritt, Hobe Sound; son Stephen (Helen) Merritt, Hobe Sound; son Raymond (Jennifer) Merritt, Palm Beach Gardens; daughter, Barbara (Keith) Patton, Hobe Sound; 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Unity Church in Stuart, Florida, 211 SE Central Parkway, on Sunday, August 21 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The family looks forward to sharing this special celebration with all who knew and loved Peggy as much as they do.
