Florence Mary Landry (Flo), 98, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 at the Hay-Madiera Hospice House in Stuart, FL. She was born in Reading, MA on March 22, 1920. She married her husband Bill on Christmas Day of 1941 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Reading. In 1966, the Landry’s moved to their home in Palm City, FL.
Mrs. Landry was the first secretary of the original Pine School on East 10th Street in Stuart. She later became the office manager at the First United Methodist Church in Stuart, working for 13 years for Dr. Jack Downey and Dr. Larry O’Steen before retiring. Not being one to sit around, she took a part-time job in the office at Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart. Bill and Flo loved the Smoky Mountains and decided to purchase a mobile home in the Sundown Resort in Townsend, TN where they spent six months out of the year. Their favorite place on Earth was Cades Cove, or “Cadies Cove” as they would say, in the Smokies.
Mrs. Landry had many talents. She was a creative writer, loved to paint, crocheted, and spent hours working on 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles. But perhaps her best known talent was playing the organ. Not able to read a note of music, she taught herself at a very young age to play the piano and organ by ear. She had the uncanny ability to listen to a song once on the radio and sit down at the keyboard and play it. Her music was the entertainment at all family functions, both in Massachusetts and Florida. Having sing-alongs will always be favorite memories for her family and friends, near and far.
Mrs. Landry was proceeded in death by her husband of 66 years, Bill; her four younger brothers, Alfred Burbine, Phillip “Chip” Burbine, Thomas Burbine, and Peter “Buddy” Burbine. She is survived by sons Wilfred Jr. (and Sharon) of Marquette, MI; Robert (and Carole) of Stuart; Thomas (and Helene) of Blairsville, GA; and Gerald of Palm City; her daughter Judy (and Bob) Fox of Fort Pierce; seven grandchildren, Matthew (and Amanda) Landry of Jensen Beach, Monica (and JJ) Lucas of Nashville, TN, Melissa (and Michael) DeStafano of Orlando, Hank (and Rebecca) Landry of Bainbridge, GA, Michael (and Melanie) of California, Dorothy (and Paul) Peroulakis of Port Salerno; nine great grandchildren, Logan, Noah, Liam, Henry, Dylan, Chloe, MJ, Andrew, and Cheyanne; one great, great-grandchild, Elizabeth Grace; and lots of Burbine nieces and nephews. She is also survived by life-long family friends Jay and Bryna Potsdam of Sewalls Point.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1454 SW Mapp Road, Palm City, with entombment at Forest Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospice, 1000 Ruhnke Street in Stuart.
