Cynthia Hawkins Shogren of Hobe Sound, Florida, died after a lengthy illness on February 14, 2024. Cynthia was born in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, on January 17, 1941, to Dr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hawkins. She graduated from Penn State and received her Master's in Special Education from Columbia University. Following in her mother's footsteps, Cynthia taught at the prestigious Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City. She was also an international airline stewardess when it was a new, adventurous, and glamorous profession.
Cynthia married Tony M. Shogren on July 30, 1966. Together, they established Shogren Industries of Concord, NC. After many years as guests of The Dunmore Beach Club in Harbour Island, Bahamas, they purchased the business with the intention of continuing the vision of Basil Aubrey, Dunmore's founding owner. They hired top chefs and managers from the Bahamas and around the world. They were pillars of the Harbour Island community frequently giving to local Harbour Island causes, especially during the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, distributing fresh water to the devastated community.
Cynthia was active with service. She was a docent at Planting Fields Arboretum, a member of the North Shore Junior League, and a board member at St. George's School in Newport, RI. During her 25 years as an active member of the Jupiter Island Garden Club, she served as recording secretary and president and was integral in the leadership of their scholarship program. She and Tony raised money for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation by hosting weekend golf and dinner dance events at The Creek Club. Always active in her faith, she served on the outreach committee at Christ Memorial Chapel and on the scholarship committee for Hobe Sound Bible College. During the Annual Summer Liberty Bell Weekend, she enjoyed orchestrating parties for young families at her Long Island home, an event remembered warmly by the community.
Cynthia was very athletic and kept active all her life. She loved tennis, but her passion was golf. She was a member of the women's golf group "The Pine Needles Nine" and was a three-time Women's Golf Champion at The Creek Club, later winning the Women's Senior Club Championship. She also served as president of The Women's Long Island Golf Association, which was founded in 1927 to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf among women in Long Island.
Cynthia was known for her glamorous, chic appearance, her kindness and grace, and her sense of fun. She loved traveling around the world shooting, golfing, skiing, and exploring other countries and cultures with her beloved Tony and their family and friends. She loved needlepoint, bridge, dogs, cooking, entertaining, Jeopardy, and reading. Although having a rich active life was important to her, Cynthia always said her favorite thing to do was go to dinner and a movie with her soulmate, Tony.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Tony Montes Shogren and two children, Alexander Shogren of Hobe Sound, Suzannah Shogren of Boulder, Colorado, as well as two grandchildren: John and Peter Kinsman.
