Charlie was born in East Brownfield, Maine on September 7th, 1927. He graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1945, served in the US Army from 1945-1947 where he played trombone in the army band. He received his AA from Portland Junior College in 1950, graduated from Syracuse University with a BA degree in 1952 and received his Master’s in English from The University of Albany in New York in 1972. He taught High School English for more than 30 years, in New York State and New Hampshire before retiring in 1990.
An avid fisherman and fly tyer, he spent summers and vacations in New York State, New Hampshire and Maine, fishing on his Boston Whaler on Lake Champlain and off of Popham Beach in Maine. For more than 70 years, his time was mostly spent at Colcord Pond in Porter, Maine where he enjoyed fishing and cruising with neighbors, friends and family on his Pontoon boats.
Charlie was a wonderful dancer and especially loved dancing the jitterbug to Big Band Music! As a jazz musician, he played trombone for nearly 15 years with The Mink Brook Marching Society, a Dixieland band, regularly playing on the Mt. Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee and Durkee’s Cider Press in Wolfeboro, NH.
In the early 21st century, he took to task a passionate project in his home town of Kezar Falls, Maine to direct the building of a community center he called Horizons, on the campus of the South Hiram Elementary School. He wanted to have a safe place for after school projects for the children and also provide the building as a place for all to enjoy.
Charlie was a prolific poet who wrote in Shakespearean sonnet and blank verse, his favorite style and was frequently compared to Robert Frost. He published a book of poetry in 2006 entitled “Early Settlement and Other Poems”, which he shared at poetry readings. You could always find him with pen in hand, eyes bright and seeking, with thoughtful expression, until finally his bowed head returned to his notepad where more beautiful words would find their home.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Willa-Jo Mauger Churchill of Stuart, FL, his daughter Susan Moran (Marty) of Wethersfield, his son, Steven Churchill of Wolfeboro, NH, his grandson, Spencer Churchill of Rochester, NY, his step children, Ken Davis of Shamong, NJ, Gwen Davis Hale of Kittery, ME, Julie Bertrand of Jensen Beach, FL, Jane Capo (Enrico) of Port St. Lucie, FL, Melanie Edwards (Bobby) of Stuart, FL, his sister in law, Dorothy Churchill of Wolfeboro, NH, numerous nieces and nephews and hundreds of dear friends.
