John Shankey was born in Suffern, NY to Thomas and Clare Shankey on December 5, 1945. He married Patricia A. Ryder on October 26, 1969, in Haverstraw, NY. He graduated from Rockland Community College and worked as a Salesman for Wilson Art Plastics for 20 years. He was the Supervisor of Stony Point for two terms. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as an Air Traffic Controller. He was on the Board of Trustees at Rockland Community College and was a dedicated member of the Stony Point Democratic Committee.
John was a gentle soul who left a positive mark on everyone he interacted with. From his family to those he served in public office, John carried himself with selflessness and care. Through his encyclopedic mind, John was always able to make strong connections with anyone he came in contact with. He was a true gentleman, it was impossible not to admire and love him. He will be greatly missed.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Shankey; brothers, Thomas, Peter and Lawrence Shankey; and sister, MaryAnn Schork.
John is survived by his three daughters, Colleen Fitzgerald (Bill), Jennifer Caoili, and Deirdre Premuto (Jerry). He is also survived by his love, Marybeth Rainey and her son, Thomas Rainey. John will be fondly remembered by his seven grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan, Anna, Ava, Joseph, Jerry and Theresa. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael and Richard Shankey, his sister Anne Yusko, and twelve nieces and nephews.
His death leaves a giant gaping hole in the lives of those who loved him.
Visitation will be from 3pm-8pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, Stony Point.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church, Stony Point. The Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Haverstraw.
