It's with heavy hearts the family of Troy Allen McDonald announced his passing on Thursday, Apr 20th, 2023, at the age of 84 years. He was surrounded by family at Shepherd's Care Kensington LTC Edmonton. He will be forever loved and affectionately remembered by all.
Troy was born in Edmonton, AB, the son of the late Norris and Ella. He is survived by his son Stephen (Karen) and grandson Matthew; his son Charles (Nicole) and granddaughter Abaigael; is also survived by his sister Sharon (Ernie) and Jean; his brothers Dougal (Marlene), Harold (Mavis) and Alfred as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Troy is also survived by his Sister-in-Law Irene, his brothers-in-law Bob (Wanda) Jim, Charlie (Noreen).
Troy was predeceased by his wife Hazel, sister Gail, sister-in-law’s Jacqueline & Brenda, and by his brother Graham and brothers-in-law Gordon & Delmar.
Troy helped on the Family farm until he moved to Edmonton where he became a carpenter. Troy was set up on a blind date by his sisters where he met his soulmate, Hazel. A few years after they were married, they returned to the McDonald homestead in Hansen’s Corner raising their son Charles.
A short time before Troy retired from his career at the Parkland School Division,he and Hazel moved into Sunrise Village in Stony Plain, where they lived for more than 15 years, before moving to Kensington Village in Edmonton. Many new friends were made at Kensington Village during the short time they lived there.
Troy enjoyed country music, a good sci-fi movie, but was also known as a social butterfly; always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His kind eyes and infectious smile were always the first thing people noticed when they would meet him for the first time.
Troy was happiest tinkering in his woodworking shop bringing his thoughts and ideas to life- whether it was the custom kitchen cutlery drawer organizers or the versatile end tables that held his latest novel he was reading. It was a labour of love, and it is safe to say many people still have some of his handywork in their homes.
Troy and Hazel loved to travel in retirement. They wintered in Hawaii with Jean and Delmar, in Arizona with Dougal and Marlene. Road trips with Charles and Nicole to wine country in BC and trips to PEI with Stephen and Karen visiting family and friends.
He was known to his grandkids Matthew and Abaigael as Grandpa and Pappa, respectively. He loved them dearly and always look forward to the next snuggle!
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial/celebration of life for Troy will take place at St. Augustine's - Parkland Anglican Church (131 Church Rd, Spruce Grove) on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023 @ 2:00 PM followed by interment of Troy & Hazel at the Inga Cemetery. Troy’s family would like to thank the staff of Kensington Long Term Care for the taking care of him as if he was their own Pappa.
