Our Mother passed away peacefully a few minutes past midnight on Thursday, July 1, 2021. She was six months shy of her goal of 100 years. During her long lifespan, Annette wore many “hats”. She was a devoted wife and mother of 4 children. Annette was not afraid to turn her hand to anything that interested her. An accomplished seamstress, Annette made professional grade garments for her family, as well as draperies, furniture covers for the home. And yes, even made several hats which she proudly wore.
Mom was a great cook and enjoyed trying out new recipes to feed us. Our parents having grown up through the Great Depression were always looking for ways to get ahead in the world. Mom was always on the go and tried many jobs both inside and outside the home. In the early 1940’s, she was the proud proprietor of a little store on Stony Plain Road in Jasper Place called the “Cinderella Variety Shoppe” which sold various notions and gadgets.
By the 1950’s she tried all sorts of hobbies like leather crafting, liquid embroidery, flower making then eventually selling Beauty Councillor Cosmetics and Tupperware. Sales seemed to be her strong suit and so she demonstrated Singer’s sewing machines and all manner of products at Woodward’s Department Store. She sold advertising for an Edmonton newspaper; in the 60’s produced her own Alberta “travel guide”, bought a small toy business and made doll cradles and stuffed toys.
By the 60’s, she was a licensed Realtor in tandem with Dad which led into owning and operating a riding stable which by the 70’s led into the thoroughbred racing and breeding business…Mom and dad retired and moved to Stony Plain in 2007. They had been married just shy of 70 years when Roland passed in 2008 and her son Denis in 1989.
She is survived by her sons Cecil and Reginald (Georgia); her daughter Barbara (Andrew); seven grandchildren: David, Michelle (Brad), Colette (Miles), Cole (Cherie), Denise (Steve), Stephen and Sara (Bobby); one step-grandson Milo; five great-grandchildren: Dustin (Shanelle), Ivy, Waylon, Sawyer and Dawson; two great-great grandchildren: Tucker and Amelia as well as numerous other relatives and many dear friends.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at a later date in the summer of 2021.
