1946 - 2020
It is with the deepest of sorrow that the family of Mr. Elmer Shukalek of Spruce Grove, AB announces his passing on March 8, 2020 at the age of 74 years.
Elmer was raised in Ispas, Alberta. He was one of 14 children born to John and Mary Shukalak (nee: Nahamko). Elmer left school early to help his family. At age 20 he married Pamela Doyle. Together they raised a son and daughter, Wesley and Colleen. Elmer, who was gifted with mechanical skills, business sense, determination and a remarkable work ethic, became a mechanic working in various places such as Suncor in Fort McMurray. He then became owner of an Edmonton- based radiator shop, Western Radiator Ltd. When he retired Elmer became an active member of the Leduc West Antique Society, sharing his love of mechanics and our Albertan heritage by restoring and exhibiting antique engines and tractors as well as threshing and sawmilling. Elmer also loved to travel and visited many countries including New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands, Cuba, Mexico, Fiji, Vietnam, Germany and Poland…not bad for a small-town Alberta boy.
In December 2016, after a seemingly successful battle with Non Hodgkins lymphoma, Elmer suffered a stroke. The stroke caused dementia and other limitations, but he was more kind, generous and loving than ever. He still found pleasure in the outdoors and with his wife, his children, his son-in-law Brian Gibb, and his grandchildren Katrina and Hudson.
Elmer was predeceased by his mother; father; one sister, Elaine; and three brothers, Billy, Bernie, and Greg.
A Memorial Service will be held for Elmer at a later date.
If friends desire, Memorial Donations may be made in Elmer’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 144, 5241 Calgary Trail NW Edmonton, AB T6H 5G8.
