Mom, known as Alf to many of her friends and family, was born on August 26th, 1945 in Edmonton, Alberta, to Kenneth and Grace Hutchings. She married her best friend, Dave Flesher on October 16, 1965. They shared a deep, lifelong bond, rooted in love and commitment, lasting an incredible 58 years - just shy of their 59th wedding anniversary!
Mom is survived by her loving husband, who was by her side as she peacefully passed. She is survived by her son, Ken (Teresa), and daughter Karrie (Clay); 4 grand-daughters (Chanel, Shealeen, Sarah, Kendal); 2 grandsons (Davis, Scott); and sister, Diana. Mom was predeceased by her parents, sister Joanne, and brother Brian.
Mom was a creative and talented lady! She was an accomplished pianist who taught piano after graduating high school. She could play most woodwind instruments and loved to sing - just ask her kids who were trapped in a car with her during their childhood - she knew every lyric to every Stevie Wonder song ever written! Sewing was also a passion for Mom; she sewed her own wedding gown, and many formal dresses including Karrie’s graduation dress and bridesmaids gowns for Ken and Teresa’s wedding.
Mom would say some of her happiest years came with retired life. She and Dad spent 16 years in Strathmore creating many special memories with new friends while being active in their tight-knit community. They travelled often to Mexico, spent many years enjoying the cabin life at Alberta Beach, and they spent 8 years wintering in Yuma, AZ, cultivating a whole other group of dear friends and creating fantastic memories with their beloved puppy, Bella.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and support staff at the WestView Health Centre who cared for mom with compassion over the past 4 years. Additional thanks go to the Homeliving Alberta Health team, especially Tracy and Diane, for their kind and knowledgeable care provided before and after Arlene’s passing.
In addition, thank you to all our friends and family who have already reached out to offer their condolences, love and support!
As per Arlene’s wishes a cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Barrhead Animal Rescue Society:
