Michael Joe Raney

Michael is survived by his wife Judith Raney of Stockton, CA, his children Christopher Raney of Manteca, CA, Samuel Raney of Stockton, CA, Ashley Thorpe (John) of Upland, CA, and Lesley Reese (Jason) of Stockton, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kenneth Reese and Jaylee Reese of Stockton, CA, Moxie Raney of Manteca, CA, and Randall Thorpe of Upland, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents Gene and Betty Raney of Stockton, CA and his daughter-in-law Mariah Ransome of Manteca, CA.

Michael was born on March 21, 1951 in Hobbs, NM to Gene and Betty Raney. He graduated from Linden High School in 1969. After high school Michael joined the United States Navy serving during the war in Vietnam. He attended San Joaquin Delta College and Humphreys College where he earned his certificate as a paralegal. He married his high school sweetheart Judith (nee Cross) in 1974. Michael worked as a Supervisor for Pacific Gas and Electric. He worked for PG&E for 36 years retiring in 2014.

Michael loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He would light up at the first sight of them. They adored him as well. Michael also loved cooking, often cooking for the entire family. He was very talented at woodworking and loved creating beautiful pieces and gifting them to his family. He was also very creative and loved to draw. He was kind, gentle, thoughtful, smart and honest. He often volunteered to help with his children’s activities whether it was hanging lights for their schools drama department or coaching their sports. He also was Den Leader for his sons Cub Scout troupe. He was a good man.

A funeral is scheduled for 10:30am on January 23, 2024 at DeYoung Memorial Chapel at 601 N. California St., Stockton, CA 95202.

Officiating will be Bishop Mark Filkey.

Visitation will be held at DeYoung Memorial Chapel on Monday, January 22, 2024 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
