Harry E. Behney

On April 18 Harry “Bud” Behney peacefully passed into heaven’s biggest workshop. Born in Stockton in 1923 to Harry and Elizabeth Behney, Bud was an Eagle Scout and Sea Scout. He graduated early from Stockton High School to join the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Bud distinguished himself during his four years of service in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was decorated many times for as evidenced by his Bronze Star. In spite of all these honors, he often said that he was most proud of his “good conduct” medal.

Returning in August 1945, Bud married his wartime sweetheart, Esther Preston of Southern California. Bud and Esther lived in San Francisco where he apprenticed with Grant Bros. Jewelers and their daughter Susan was born.

The family moved to Stockton where Bud joined his step-father and brother-in-law in the will known jewelry store Arthur Glicks. In the 1960’s Bud retired from the family business and opened Bud Behney Jewelers.

Known not only for beautiful jewelry design, Bud was just as handy fixing broken appliances, building boats, and making wooden toys.

After years of world travel, Bud and Esther moved to O’Connor woods- though they never really left Manchester Ave. Bud made so many friends at O’Connor Woods and enjoyed the camaraderie in the Work Shop, at morning coffee, and at Veteran’s activities.

In the past year, Bud “officially” adopted some of Susan’s friends to be part of the Behney family. His heart and extended family grew much larger when he met Norma Ditto. Being part of her loving family made this year’s Thanksgiving the best ever.
