Delois Ann Pittman was born to the late Charles and Doretha Pittman on January 25, 1946, in Berkeley, CA. She was the third of five girl siblings, joining Rita Jean and Luella and later Leona Charlene, Oral Lee and Patricia (deceased). The family moved to the Estuary Housing in Alameda, CA where they developed relationships and made life-long friends. She attended and graduated from Encinal High School. She accepted Christ at an early age at the Estuary Community Church in Alameda which later became Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, CA. under the leadership of the late Dr. Herbert Guice. Delois was a charter member and sang in the Echoes of Bethel Choir. She would later become a member of Progressive Community Church where she also sang in the choir and worked with the bulletin Ministry.
Delois worked 34 years for the U.S. Postal Service as a Mail Distribution Clerk. Ms. Dee enjoyed being a grandmother, baking, cooking and shopping at the 99 cents and Dollar Stores. She took a special delight in watching people enjoy her meals and desserts. Her face would light up when people complimented about how much they enjoyed her “labor of love”. Delois will forever be known for her delicious cakes, especially the Red Velvet cake and cupcakes.
Delois was a loving and caring woman who provided for those in need. She was a dedicated mom, grandma, sister, aunt, mother in law and friend. Her sisters called her “Sarge” because she was known to take charge of any situation. She loved her family dearly and unconditionally, especially cherishing her role as a grandmother. Affectionately known as Ms. Dee or Mamma Dee, she did whatever she could to make those who knew her happy, whether it was by making them a flower pen, baking cakes or just a “hey baby” hello.
Delois is survived by her son, Shawn, daughter in-law Mia, granddaughters, Stephanie, Danielle and Alexis; sisters Rita Jean, Luella, Leona Charlene, Oral Lee, cousins and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
