On November 17, 2014, Captain Spencer Herbert Grant of Stockbridge GA made his final flight to glory on the wings of a snow white dove.
He was born September 19, 1919 in Lanark, Montana to parents Herbert and Nina (Halbert) Grant.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Karla Helms (Tom), sister Evelyn Gibson (Gordon) and brother Bobby Grant (Trudy). He
has many happy childhood memories of growing up farming the wheat fields of Montana. Returning annually for the Prairie Festival in Scobey MT, he gained legendary status as “The Toy Drop Pilot”. To the delight of the attendees at the festival, he would fly over the Antique Tractor Parade and drop small toys and flags from his airplane.
The Toy Drop was also one of the favorite attractions of Yule Forest, his Christmas tree farm in Stockbridge GA that served the community for the last 34 years.
Many years before that, in 1942, he began his military service as a bomber pilot in WWII with the Army Air Corps and later as a captain for the Air Force in the Korean War.
Following his years serving his country, for over 33 years, he was a pilot with Eastern Airlines until 1979.
His devotion to his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was evident in every Eggnog Party, cookout, pancake breakfast, patio dance party—any event he hosted or attended.
He will be missed by his surviving children, Nolan Grant (Anne) of Cumming GA, Allen Grant (Susie) of Stockbridge GA and Debby Teague- VanCleave (Ralph) of Bryan TX.
In addition, his longtime dance partner and loving companion, Kathy Griffen and his 11 grandchildren, Lance Helms, Lynnette Montgomery, Lathe Helms (Jessica), Jackie Murph (Tim), Jason Grant, Spencer Grant (Crystal), Georgene Sneed (Mike), Spencer Allen Grant, Jr. (Stephanie), Arrah Grant, Michael Bice (Stephani) and Greg Harris, his 20 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren will remember his legacy and love.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Way of Henry County 107 Westridge Industrial Blvd. McDonough GA 30253.
Memorial Services will be held in the chapel of Horis A. Ward Funeral Home, 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, GA, 30281, at 3:00 pm on Friday, November 21 with the Rev. Dr. John V. Callahan officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1pm-3pm prior to the service on Friday.
