Visitation will be held at the Horis A. Ward Funeral Home, Fairview Chapel in Stockbridge Georgia on July 23, 2015 from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon.
The funeral service will follow the visitation with the Reverend Claire Yoder of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church officiating. Horis A. Ward Funeral Home, Fairview Chapel is handling the funeral arrangements.
Alvis was born in Lorraine, Rockdale County, Georgia to John Bunyan and Kate Ora Helms McCullough on April 13, 1925. Alvis was a WWII Naval Veteran. He was employed by The Continental Insurance Companies in Atlanta, Georgia and worked his way up to become the Regional Comptroller. He retired after 40 years of service. After a year of retiring, he became a Certified Insurance Examiner working with the Georgia Department of Insurance. He later worked with the Kentucky Department of Insurance. On June 20, 2006, he was commissioned a KENTUCKY COLONEL; Kentucky’s Highest Honor, presented by the Governor of Kentucky. He served as Choir Director for his church. He enjoyed singing for various occasions. He sang with The Choral Guild of Atlanta from Post-World War II, singing solos and duets all over the world, to the end of Jim Bohart’s tenure. He joined the Collegium Vocale under the direction of Kevin Hibbard in 2007 and retired after a few seasons, due to health issues.
Alvis was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kate McCullough, his brothers/spouses, Clarence (Blanche), Adel (Sarah), Cliff (Margie), Howard (Jewell), Grady (Miriam), and J.H. (Hazel) McCullough; his sisters/spouses, Virgia Mae (Idus). Hill, Julia (Earl) Gilbert, and Ethel Kate (Coley) Scarbrough; his nephews, Benard Gilbert, Kenneth and Warren McCullough, and Russell Scarbrough; and his niece, Emma Kate Rickerson.
Alvis is survived by his wife, Velma Wilkinson McCullough of Lithonia, Georgia; His son, Charles Robert McCullough (Jim) of Dawsonville, Georgia; daughter Pamela (Walter) Sanders-Nesbitt of Columbus, Georgia and son, Michael Sanders of Atlanta, Georgia and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
