Ray was born on November 6, 1933, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Ray H. and M. Gwendolyn Kirk. He spent his impressionable years in Huntington, West Virginia, where he graduated from High School and attended Marshall University. He also took classes at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
He was later employed in Huntington by Owens Illinois Glass Manufacturing, where he held various positions. His employment was interrupted by the US Army, where he spent most of his 3½ year career as an Ajax and Hercules Surface to Air Missile Fire Control Tech. He was honorably discharged as a Sgt. E5 and returned to work at Owens.
He was transferred by his company to Atlanta in 1972, where he was over Quality Control. He was later promoted to Senior Area Quality Control Engineer. He retired in 1987, with 34 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lenna. He is survived by his son David Gammon (Jackie) of Norristown, PA; daughters, Sheri Feld (Eric) of Boynton Beach, FL; and Jennifer Watkins of Locust Grove, GA; grandchildren, April Watkins (Michael Shinall), James Watkins (Brittany), and Alexander Feld; sister, Gerry Garshaw (Bruce) of Ormond Beach, FL; brother in-law, Richard Kirkland, Jr. (Carol) of Powder Springs, GA; and several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Bodé.
A memorial service will be held at Stockbridge First United Methodist Church, 4863 N. Henry Blvd., Stockbridge, GA, on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 1pm, officiated by Pastor Andy Postell. Burial will follow the service at Union United Methodist Church in Stockbridge. The family will have visitation at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday from 12 to 1 pm.
He was a member of Stockbridge First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. His family and his church were the loves of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stockbridge FUMC, or the church of your choice.
