Norma Elaine Duncan was born on January 7, 1938 in Spanish Town, Jamaica to Hilda Maud Hibbert and Karl C. Duncan. As a young woman, she was an accomplished court reporter who excelled in stenography. She married Glaister Verley and became the proud mother of three children on whom she lavished her time, wisdom, and unconditional love. After immigrating to New Jersey in 1968, she worked as a highly-esteemed administrative assistant to the president of S.S. Steiner Inc. for over thirty years. In 1983, she married Rupert O. Barrett and enjoyed thirty-one years of loving fellowship. During that time, she dedicated herself to dutifully serving as a missionary at First Fellowship Cathedral in Orange, New Jersey.
Eight years ago, Norma officially retired and moved to McDonough, GA where she became an active member of the McDonough First Assembly of God Church. There, she worshipped and volunteered as a teacher and greeter. Norma enjoyed spending time with family, sewing, cooking, gardening, playing Scrabble, and doing crossword puzzles. With an intense love of God, she continued her ministry by serving as a spiritual leader and counselor for her family, friends, and many with whom she came in contact.
Norma Elaine Verley-Barrett peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September, 24, 2014. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband Rupert, her son Brian C. Verley, her daughters Dr. Janice R. Verley and Sandra Verley-Reid, son-in-law Aaron E. Reid, grandchildren- Mark Aaron Reid, Sierra LeAnn Reid, and Kayla Elaine Verley, siblings - Verna Mowatt, Desmond Rose, Noel Golbourne, Lee Golbourne, and Georgia Bryden, many spiritual children, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Norma’s loving goodness and integrity impacted many lives in a positive way. Her vibrant zest for life will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
