Mary Dash Butler, age 85, entered her eternal home in Heaven on Sunday, August 18, 2019. Mary was born Mary Jane Dash on November 26, 1933 in the Town of Evans, New York. She graduated from Lake Shore Central School on June 26, 1951 where she worked in the school office.
Mary married Lee H. Barrett on June 14, 1952 and began a 20-year journey as an Army wife. Mary & Lee had three children, David, Susan, and Dianne. Mary loved her children dearly, and later, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary continued her life’s journey later with Roy Strickland until his death and then Deon Butler.
In 1969 Mary went to work as a Deputy Sheriff for the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department. She enjoyed the job of accounting, assisting with prisoner pickup, working with judges to collect fines, and qualifying with her pistol yearly. Mary retired from the Sheriff’s Department in 1990. Mary joined Morrow Presbyterian Church in 2008. While her health permitted, she enjoyed attending worship, Women’s Retreats, and the Mother’s Day Brunches. She looked forward to helping in the office with the newsletters each month. Mary loved to dance to country music in her younger years and loved to work in her yard as she grew older.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Curtis & Molly Dash, her brothers Tommy & Kenny, and her sister, Kate. She is survived by her brother, Mike (Claire) Dash of Pittsfield, MA, her children: David (Dorothy) Barrett of Vidalia, GA; Susan (Charlie) Brown of Mesa, AZ; Dianne (Ronnie) Hooten of Rex, GA; her grandchildren, Stephen (Becca) Brown, Jeffrey (Maribel) Brown, Kevin (Jaime) Brown, April (Wesley) Barfield, Rebekah Barrett, Sarah Barrett, Matthew Hooten, Kris Hooten, and great-grandchildren Kyleigh Brown, Lee Brown, Kara Brown, Ryker Brown, Sophia Brown, Peyton Barfield, Reagan Nunnally, Haleigh Nunnally, Judah Nunnally, her nephew Bill (Jessica) Burke, her great-nephews Bryce Burke, Austin Burke, her great-niece, Karissa Burke, and other nieces, nephews, and greats.
Family and friends will be received for a visitation on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home located at 376 Fairview Rd in Stockbridge, GA 30281. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 3 PM at Morrow Presbyterian Church located at 6171 Huie Drive in Morrow, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Morrow Presbyterian Church or the PKD Foundation.
