John was born on December 2, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia to Annie Laura Holmes and John Henry Holmes, Sr. After high school, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.
After serving in the Army, John worked for Owens Illinois, Southern Railroad and as a bus driver for Dekalb County Public Schools. He was a dedicated hardworking man and cherished the students he transported until his retirement after many years of service.
John was married to the late Mary Ella Holmes. Together they loved and supported each other and loved on their family. He absolutely loved being a part of the Beulah Family Life Center Bid Whist Players.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Annie Holmes; wife, Mary Ella Holmes; sister, Betty Jean Homes; nephew, Lawrence Holmes, Jr. and brothers-in-law, Michael Scott and Melzie Pullins.
John's life will forever be remembered and cherished by his children, Quinnton Holmes, Sr. (Crystal Washington), Shawnya Lemons and Erica Robinson; grandchildren, Quinnton Holmes, Jr., Justin Thibodeaux, Aleah Thibodeaux, Phillip Lemons, Jeremy Lemons and Hannah Lemons; siblings, Virginia Holmes Pullin, Lawrence Holmes, Sr. (Angela Holmes), Sondra Holmes Scott and Sherry Holmes Bacon (Michael Bacon); nieces and nephews, Sean Owens, Larvell Pullin, Angelo Holmes, Sher'rie Bacon, Michelle Bacon, Michael Scott and Jarmelle Scott; special friend, Ethel Collins; a host of other relatives and family friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a walk-thru visitation on Thursday, February 11, 2021 from 4:00PM-7:00PM at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home-Fairview Chapel, 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, Georgia 30281, where the Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 11:00AM. Burial will immediately follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
