Born August 3, 1939, in Moultrie, GA, he was the son of the late Ralph Charlie Bates and Fannie Zela York Bates. He was preceded in death by his wife Deborah Bintz Bates and his sister Jeanette Bates. He was a member of the Stockbridge First United Methodist Church. Jim worked for E. Sam Jones Distributor at the time of his death and had been delivering freight for his current and former employers across Metro Atlanta for almost 60 years. He enjoyed gardening and making his yard a showplace in his spare time, as well as spending time with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory his five children: Chris Bates of Charlotte, NC; David Watson of Stockbridge, GA; Debbie Watson of Jonesboro, GA; Tina D. Bates of Newnan, GA; and Donna (Ronnie) Martin of McDonough, GA; his 2 siblings: Dolores Bates Laseter of Ochlocknee, GA and Joseph T. Bates of Moultrie; six grandchildren: Stephanie Martin of Snellville, GA; Kayla (Dillon) Blanchard of Chicago, IL; Elizabeth (Joseph) Valdez of Charlotte, NC; Drew White of Eastman, GA; Rachel White of Conyers, GA; Thomas Bates of Charlotte, NC; as well as six great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life memorial service for Jimmy will be held Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Stockbridge First United Methodist Church, 4863 North Henry Blvd., Stockbridge, GA 30281. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
