Andre’ Wilkerson, Sr., age 61, (lovingly called Googie by his family) was born July 17, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late John Robert and Barbara Ann Matthews Wilkerson. Beloved by all who knew him, Andre’ entered into eternal rest on August 1, 2022.
Andre’ graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia in 1979. While in high school, he played football, baseball, and ran track. Upon graduation from high school, Andre’ served three years on active duty in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon and the Infantry (Expert), Rifle (Marksman), Grenade (Expert), and Tow Gunner (Expert) Badges.
Andre’ worked in records management at the National Archives and Records Administration for over 20 years. He previously worked in records management as a government contractor servicing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Andre’ enjoyed being outdoors and doing lawn care. He took pride in maintaining his lawn, as well as the lawns of others.
Andre’ has been a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Stockbridge, Georgia, since May 2015. He served as a member of the United Methodist Men and Honduras Mission Team. He found great joy in this service as he helped others to have a better life and introduce them to Christ.
Andre’ was a die-hard Atlanta Falcons fan. Even when others had lost hope, he proudly displayed his Atlanta Falcons paraphernalia on his truck, in his yard, and in his home. One of his finest moments was when he was nominated and selected to receive a Veteran’s Day Freddie-Gram delivery from Freddie Falcon. His joy could not be contained when the Falcons played in their second Superbowl, in 2017. Of course, his joy was short-lived, as the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead against the Patriots in Superbowl LI. Andre’ being the die-hard Falcons fan that he was, held out hope for the next several seasons.
Andre’ was a kind and gentle person who loved the Lord, his wife, children, grandchildren, family, friends, and people in general. He loved life and spending time with his loved ones. Whether it was those closest to him or those who simply needed it most, he was always finding ways to lead, encourage, inspire, and let God’s love work through him. Some people are on this earth just so God’s light has something to shine through. Andre’ was one of those people.
In addition to his parents, Andre’ was preceded in death by his brother, Derrick (aka Poncho) Wilkerson and his ex-wife, Janice Benson Wilkerson.
Andre’ is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Collins Wilkerson; children: Jarvis, Andrea, Cameron, Christina, Andre’ Jr., and Jada Wilkerson; grandchildren: Shakier Creamer, Quantae Mitchell, Maurice Anderson, Camille Wilkerson, Jeremiah Wilkerson, and Jamal Anderson; brothers: Ricky Wilkerson, Serpico Montford, and Orlando Montford; sisters: Cheryl (Dyvine aka Kieno) Brittian, Shelia Colvard, Verscie (Alvin) Gay, and Angela Montford; father and mother-in-law: Melvin and Leona Collins; brother-in-law: Melvin (May) Collins; aunts: Gloria Matthews Stegall and Martha Jo Campbell; uncle: Robert Matthews; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
