Velna Brown Jenkins

She was born July 24, 1930, in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Carl William and Adelia Kates Brown. She was a Class of 1948 graduate of Celeste Henkel School and attended Mitchell College for one year.

On February 18, 1951, she married Glenn Allen Jenkins who preceded her in death on December 23, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a son, David, on August 7, 1988, as well as her sisters and brothers: Ineze York, Eutrella Shook, Mildred Gibson, Vermell Bost, Eugene (Gene) Brown, Davis Brown and Hoyte Brown and 2 great grandchildren.

Velna was a life long member of Beulah Baptist Church. She loved her church family and worked in several positions in the church. She was a volunteer at Iredell Memorial Hospital since 1993, where she enjoyed her work and helping others. She worked in manufacturing and textiles for 30 years and after retirement worked part time in the Iredell County school system and Beulah's day care.

Velna is survived by her children, Judy Zingaro (Joe), Janet Stack (Garland), Jerry Jenkins (Lillian) and Ted Jenkins (Kathy); ten grandchildren, Alyssa Middleton-Yates, Amanda Middleton, Traci Duke, Jeffrey Dodson, Angie Anders, Amy Bannister, Joshua Jenkins, Jessica Kight, Christopher Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins; six step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild expected in November.

Services celebrating Velna's life will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Garrett and Dr. Allen Roberts officiating. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be: Ray Benfield, Randy Brown and Cliff Brown. She will lie in state and the family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 1:00 until 3:00 prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
