Stamey Mills, Jr., 88, of 141 Pine State Road, Troutman, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born in Iredell County on June 22, 1922, he was a son of the late Stamey Mills, Sr. and Sarah Small Mills. Mr. Mills was retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Charlotte and enjoyed building bird houses and playing his guitar at area nursing homes. He was a former Special Deputy with the Iredell County Sheriff's Department and he and Mrs. Mills were still living in the home he built for them in 1958. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in France, Australia and Germany.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence Mills and Albert Mills and sisters, Mrs. Alice Swain and Mrs. Margaret McMillan.
On June 11, 1943, he married the former Blanche Marie Bumgarner who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Wayne Mills of Jacksonville, Fla. and Roger Dale Mills and his wife, Kay of Mill Springs; and a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Ammon and her husband, Jeff of Statesville. Also surviving are sisters, Miss Hazel Mills, Mrs. Martha Moose and Mrs. Ruth Wiles all of Statesville. Surviving grandchildren are, Shanda Lottrell, Lynn Ammon, Erica Mills and Darren Mills and great grandchildren, Avery, Alishia, Anna, Isabella, Camron and Samantha.
Services celebrating Mr. Mills' life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Corbell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. At other times, they will be assembled at the residence. Burial will follow with graveside services at 2 p.m. Monday at Iredell Memorial Gardens with Full Military Rites presented by members of the Burial Detail of the Iredell County Veterans Council.
