Ross Wilson Cook, 94, of Cottonwood Road, Cleveland, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at his home. He was born on May 29, 1916, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Charles Linden Cook and Julia Mills Cook. He graduated from Troutman High School and worked in the textile industry before retiring from Southern Screw Company in 1979. He attended Back Creek Presbyterian Church, and he was known as an avid gardener throughout his life, enjoying hunting, fishing, and playing checkers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Carl L. Cook, Helen Brown, G. Allen Cook, Edna King, and Martha Sipes.
He was loved by his family, but especially by his wife, Margaret Christy Cook, who survives. Sweethearts since the age of eight, they married on April 11, 1936, celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary just two months ago. Also surviving are his children, Shirley Heintz (Steve) of Statesville; Ronald Cook (Judy) of Waxhaw, and Charles Cook (Gwen) of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Scott Heintz and Stephanie Wood of Statesville, Sarah Morrow of Forest City, Marell and Andrew Cook of Charlotte; five great grandchildren, Alaina Dennis, Nathan and Gabe Heintz all of Statesville, and Brinkley and Braylen Morrow of Forest City; and a sister, Ava Rickard of Kannapolis.
A service celebrating the life of Mr. Cook will be held at Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Mt. Ulla, at 11:00 AM Monday, June 28, with the Rev. Bill Thrailkill presiding. The body will lie in state for an hour before the service, at which time the family will receive friends.
Pallbearers for the service will be: Scott Heintz, Andrew Cook, Richard Wood, Phillip Morrow, Steve Heintz, and Randy Howard.
Following the service, entombment will take place in the mausoleum of Iredell Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC, 28625, or Back Creek Presbyterian Church, 2145 Back Creek Church Road, Mt. Ulla, NC 28125.
