Joyce Lawrence Nabors age 84 of Elkins, NC and formerly of Statesville, NC went home to be with the Lord on May 2, 2012. She was the widow of James Julius Nabors, whom she met in London, England during World War II.
Mrs. Nabors was born February 17, 1928 in London, England. After meeting Mr. Nabors she emigrated to the United States in 1946. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Jane Lawrence and brother Ernie Lawrence all of Broadstairs Kent, England.
Since Mr. Nabors; death in 1990 she has lived with her children, Lawrence Howard Nabors, MD, Joan Robecca Nabors and Lisa Nabors.
Mrs. Nabors was saved and baptized at Western Avenue Baptist Church in Statesville in 1946. She faithfully taught Sunday school for 30+ years at Western Avenue Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist Church. She was above all a passionate believer and warrior for Jesus Christ. She was a loving wife, mother, and always proud of her English heritage.
She died after a brief illness at her home in Thurmond, NC. She is survived by a son, Lawrence Howard Nabors, MD, two daughters Joan Rebecca Nabors and Lisa Nabors of the home and Andrew Nabors Hethcox (grandson) of the home.
A daughter Wendy Nabors (Vernon) Gilliatt and 3 granddaughters, Samantha Nabors, Mackenzie Lawrence and Alexandra Rebecca, of High Point, NC. A daughter Jennifer Hethcox and granddaughter Rebecca Hethcox (Kermit) Smith and 2 great grandsons, Maddox Kilpatrick and Beckett Thomas of Greenwood, SC. She is also survived by a sister, Joan Westin Knott of Deal Kent, England.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 4, 2012 from 6:00 pm -8:00 pn at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville, NC. The funeral service will be at Western Avenue Baptist Church, Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 11:00 am officiated by Jon Bowman Pastor of Peace Haven Baptist Church in Yadkinville, NC (Mrs. Nabors' home church)
Pallbearers will be: John Gilleland of Lincolnton,Chris Gilleland of Lincolnton, Johnny Johnson, Statesville, Tommy Johnson, Statesville, Eddie Dearman, Statesville, Timothy Dearman, Statesville.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Foundation, Elkin, NC.
Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
