Mr. Joseph Malachi Cowan, 77, of 328 Garfield St. Statesville, died May 18, 2013 at Forsyth Regional Medical Center. Born in Iredell County on July 29,1935, he was a son of the late Elvert Walter Cowan, Sr. and Zoreather Turner Cowan. He was retired from Southern Screw Company and had worked at Bi-Lo in the produce dept. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and was a graduate of Unity High School. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, singing and was a very spiritual and well dressed man. Until his health failed, he served as an elder at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church where he was also a member.
He was preceded in death by a son, Cedric Cowan.
Survivors include his wife, the former Margaretta Rankin, four sons, Joseph Eric Cowan (Ruby) of Winston-Salem, Christopher Malachi Cowan of Lumberton, Jeffrey Evans Cowan (Katie) of Lexington and Stanley Maurice Cowan of Stony Point, four daughters, Sheila Marguerita Cowan of Statesville, Terri Lynn Cowan of Mooresville, Crystal Marcella Sharpe (Lathan) of Advance and Chandra Jean Dulin (Steve) of Statesville.
Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Eva Estelle Rouse of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Mildred Hill of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Evelyn Pearson of Cleveland, N.C., along with 24 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Additional survivors are his 4 very special friends: Mrs. Juanita Walker, Melvin Gaither, Mrs. Lizzie Barber and his nephew, Anthony.
Services celebrating Mr. Cowan's life will be conducted at 11:00 Thursday at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church with Pastor Timothy Bates officiating. He will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service while the family receives friends, and burial will follow in the Natinal Cemetery in Salisbury with full military rites.
