He was born February 24, 1926, in Davie County and was a son of the late Earl Ransom and Bertha Moore Benge. He retired from Dixie Seating Company and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed his work and reading.
On March 2, 1963, he married the former Eula Dishman who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Melvin Ray Benge and his wife, Sylvia, and Larry Dean Benge and his wife, Glenda, all of Statesville and Rickie Lee Shumaker and his wife, Deborah, of Kingsland, Georgia; two daughters, Carol B. Jones and her husband, Allen and Geraldine "Jeri" Newland, all of Statesville; two brothers, Ralph Benge of Jacksonville, Fla. and Clifton Benge of Union Grove; two sisters, Lois Floyd of Statesville and Wynette Sizemore of Hickory; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Services celebrating Mr. Benge's life will be conducted at 11:00 Thursday at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Varner and the Rev. Lugene McDaniels officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the National Cemetery in Salisbury with full military rites.
Pallbearers will be Brian Shaw, Brandon Rachels, Shane Harris, Michael and Jason Benge and Kevin Adkins.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
