He was born August 27, 1924, in Iredell County, and was the son of the late Marcus Wood and Annie Belle Harris Thomas. He was a graduate of Harmony High School and was a member of Olivet Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and deacon. Mr. Thomas was employed many years at the JCPenney warehouse and retired from security at McGuire Nuclear Station. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in France and Germany.
Mr. Thomas was married to Aileen Brown Thomas on December 20, 1962, who preceded him in on December 9, 2000. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Nevin, Earl, and Isaac Thomas; and five sisters, Elva Lackey, Lillian “Billie” Barnhardt, Nell Potts, Mattie Reid, and Dorothy Poston.
Basil is survived by three sisters-in-law, Ada Thomas of Charlotte, Frances Lytton of Claremont, and Una Mae Brown of Catawba; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday at Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Matt Rummage and the Rev. Matthew Eades officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 PM Thursday at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barry Thomas, David Gosnell, Tim Reid, Jack Lytton, Robert Eades, Gary Edwards, Jason Drum, and Mel Hargis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Baptist Church Building Fund, 7893 Monbo Road, Catawba, NC 28609.
