Mrs. Pennington was a native and life-long resident of Bulloch County graduating from Nevils High School in 1930 and then attended Draughns’ College in Savannah. She was a past member of several bridge clubs in Register and Statesboro, served as treasurer of the Civic Garden Club for over 20 years and was a member of the Mina Franklin Circle. She was a faithful member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Faith Sunday school class. Mrs. Pennington was known for making the best pound cakes and being one of the best cooks in the area and was a big entertainer in the Register community for many years. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, R. T. and Amanda Denmark Simmons, her husband, Malloy Jackson Pennington, her two sons, John Monroe and James Robert “Bobby” Pennington, her brothers, Robert, Jimmy, Dent and Tommy (T.C.) Simmons and her sister, Gladys Simmons.
Mrs. Pennington is survived by her daughter, Mary Emma Pennington of Statesboro; two granddaughters, Amanda Jane Martin of Atlanta and Elizabeth P. Ewing of Ashville, NC.
The family will receive friends 9:30 to 11:00 AM Thursday, October 8, 2015 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
A private graveside service will be held in Eastside Cemetery with Elder Randy Waters officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Simmons, Bill Waters, Doug Brannen, Jackie Brannen, Edmund Brannen, Vann Simmons, Greg Simmons, Dudley Johnson and David Carpenter.
