We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a beloved father and grandfather. William E Van Pelt, 86 years old passed away peacefully on Wednesday Feb 28, 2024, at Richmond University Medical Center.
He was born on the 4th of July 1937 to parents Evelyn and William Van Pelt of Stapleton Staten Island. He attended McKee Vocational High School and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962. He was then employed by NYC Environmental Protection Agency on Castleton Avenue as a Sewage Treatment Worker, retiring in 1994.
William was a true patriot and an avid fisherman. His love for the open waters and the thrill of the catch was only matched by his fondness for the vibrant casino life in Atlantic City. He lived a life full of passion and dedication to the things he loved, including his country. His kindness touched not only his family but also the many stray cats he lovingly fed. A man of adventure, he also found joy in traveling to different places all over the country with his wife Faye, they were active in several AARP groups.
He was with his wife, Faye Engles, for 33 years, who predeceased him in October of last year. He was predeceased by four brothers, Russell, Gilbert, George, and Wallace. He was also predeceased by his son, John.
He was a loving grandfather to grandchildren Alexandra and Michael Bruno, Desean Singh, Charles and Nick Miraglia, Chris and Pete Troiano.
He is survived by his children William (spouse Shara) and Lisa (spouse Michael Bruno) and by his sister Irene O’Neill. He is also survived by his children in law Gregg Engles, Gail Engles (Miraglia), and Kat Troiano.
His generous spirit and love for life’s simple pleasures will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. His memory will be a beacon of warmth and compassion in our lives.
A visitation for William will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY 10310.
