The lifelong West Brighton resident graduated from Susan Wagner High School, where the talented athlete played football.
He received a scholarship to Dean College in Franklin, Mass., where he played football. He then was recruited by the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, where he also played football and earned his bachelor's degree.
Mr. Johnson volunteered as an offline junior varsity coach at Susan Wagner High School. He also was a member of the Staten Island Boys Football League.
He had worked as an elevator mechanic for Schlinder in Manhattan for eight years.
Mr. Johnson was a Mason and a member of Tompkins Lodge.
A sports enthusiast, he rooted for the New York Yankees and football Giants.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and especially loved being a doting uncle to his niece and nephews.
"He had a great sense of humor and possessed a smile that could light up a room," said his brother-in-law, Keith Lotito. He also was loving and generous, he added.
Mr. Johnson was a parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton.
He is survived by his parents, Russell and Carolynn Johnson, and his sister, Jennifer Lotito.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Arrangements include cremation.
