The Manhattan native moved with his family as a child to West Brighton and graduated from Curtis High School.
Mr. Rothmund settled in Westerleigh in 1977.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963, stationed overseas.
Mr. Rothmund worked for 15 years as a truck driver in the tri-state arfea for the New York State Gasoline Testing Program. He retired in 2007.
An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
"He was a loving father and grandfather, and was generous to everyone that knew him," his family said.
Mr. Rothmund was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners.
His wife of 45 years, the former Beverly Baetz, died in 2009.
Surviving are his sons, Ronald T. and Kenneth; his brother, John, and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
