Born on Staten Island, Mr. Pion graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1968 and attended the College of Staten Island. From 1984 to 1986, Mr. Pion lived in Cupertino, Calif. He later lived in Fairfield, Conn., from 1986 to 1987 and in Brooklyn, Conn., from 1987 to 1994 before returning to Castleton Corners.
He worked as a systems analyst until 2003.
From 1971 to 1972 Mr. Pion served in the U.S. Army in the 2nd Squadron of the 17th Cavalry of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed riding his Harley, driving sportscars, fishing and visiting fellow veterans.
“He was a very brave and courageous combat veteran who served his county well, he always made people laugh, and he was a kind and loving husband,” said his wife of 30 years, the former Brenda Baron.
In addition to his wife, Brenda, surviving are his son, Jarrett Pion, and two grandsons.
The funeral will be Friday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a 10 a.m. service at the Fort Wadsworth Chapel, Dongan Hills. Burial arrangements are pending.
