Born in Rosebank, he graduated from St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School. He settled in Westerleigh in 1975.
Mr. Pettinato worked for the city Parks Department for 10 years, from 1987 to 1997. He primarily worked in Brooklyn as a member of the “blitz crew,” which handled an duties ranging from planting to clean-up, said his wife, the former Colleen Spinelli. He then worked for a private security company.
“He enjoyed always being with his family,” his wife said.
Mr. Pettinato loved vacationing with his family at a house in the Trails End section of Shohola Falls, Pa.
He often went hunting in the Adirondacks and also enjoyed watching television, notably the Animal Planet and History channels, and “Family Guy.”
Mr. Pettinato attended Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh.
Surviving, along with Colleen, his wife of 24 years, are his sons, Salvatore, Michael Jr., Domenick and Christopher; a brother, Edward; three sisters, Karen Pati, Terry Humenski and Ellen Lenza, and a granddaughter.
The funeral will be tomorrow from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
