Mary Bernice Barone, nee Cary, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on June 20, 2024. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Bernice grew up in Westerleigh and lived in the house that she grew up in all her life. Along with her ancestors, Bernice was a proud lifelong Staten Islander. Bernice was the last of the Cary family that had lived on Staten Island since the 1600's. Cary Avenue was named after her Great-Grandfather.
She graduated Notre Dame Academy in 1945 and worked for the former NY Telephone Company as a customer service representative for 43 years. Bernice was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She was active in sports throughout her life. She was a speedskater and raced at Madison Square Garden in the Silver Skates. She was an avid equestrian, and loved watching all sports, especially football on her rabbit ear television set.
Bernice was a Blessed Sacrament Parishioner and prayed every day. She is survived by her three daughters, Roberta Mohr, Carol Rossmann, and Janice Kartalis; her seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Her kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family continues to inspire those around her today. She will be greatly missed.
A visitation for Bernice will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY 10310.
A celebration of life will occur Wednesday, June 26, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, at Harmon Funeral Home, followed by a religious ceremony from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 1091 Forest Ave, New York, NY 10310.
A graveside service will occur Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Holy Cross Burial Park, 840 Cranbury - South River Rd, Jamesburg, NJ 08831.
