Mary Ann Weibel passed away peacefully at home on April 21, 2020 after a short battle with cancer.
Mary Ann was born in Brooklyn to William and Ann Ryan and moved with her family to the Todt Hill Projects when she was five. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School for girls in 1965 and from Hunter College. Other than working at Macy’s during her college years, she spent her entire career at the Willowbrook State School and Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Service Office (DDSO) as a case worker/ social worker.
She was very active in the golfing community serving as the vice president of the Staten Island Women’s Golf Association (SIWGA) and as an officer and player with the Silvettes, Weekenders and Vagabonds. She also bowled in two leagues for the winter and summer seasons. Additionally, she learned to play bridge and joined two monthly bridge groups to add to her many activities.
Mary Ann was a prolific volunteer, recently serving as the president of the Women’s Auxiliary of Historic Richmond Town as well as delivering meals for Meals on Wheels for fifteen years. She also volunteered for “A Very Special Place” assisting with fundraising projects and special events and the Board of Elections as a poll worker on election day.
She is survived by her husband of forty years, Dan; two brothers, Michael Ryan (Karen) of Manhattan/ Miami Beach Florida, William Ryan (Jeanne) of Ashfield, Massachusetts; nephews, Scott Ryan of Summit New Jersey, Mark Ryan of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Joseph Weibel of Staten Island, and Stephen Weibel of Florida; one niece, Donna Carnes of Sherman Texas; brothers-in-law John and Joseph Weibel; great nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Mary Ann will be remembered for her infectious personality, energy, vitality and unselfishness. She was a dear friend to many and will be sorely missed.
Due to current circumstances, funeral services at Casey McCallum Rice Funeral Home and burial services at Resurrection Cemetery will be private. A Memorial Mass at Mary Ann’s parish, St. Christopher St. Margaret Mary and a celebration of life will be scheduled in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels and the Staten Island Historical Society.
