Fan of the Giants, Mets & Rangers; loved vacations to LBI
Mark James Benson, age 55, passed away on June 25, 2020, in the company of his beloved wife of 32 years, Denise Johnson.
He is also survived by his two loving daughters, Jaclyn Mary and GinaMarie Benson; his parents, James and Katherine Benson; and his three sisters, Donna Salvatore and sister in-law Toni, Mary Virga and brother in-law Greg and Jill Benson. He will also be remembered by his brother in-law and sister in-law James and Ann Johnson. He will fondly be remembered by his nieces and nephews, Emily, Ryan, Jake, Kaleigh, Lili, James and Jillian.
Mark, a West Brighton native, attended PS 45 and IS 61, and graduated Curtis High School with the Class of 1982. He earned his bachelor's degree at Baruch College in 1986.
Mark spent over 36 years building his career at Guy Carpenter & Co., a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, where he worked as Vice President. Mark's survival of the 1993 WTC bombing predetermined his heroic efforts during 9/11. During that crisis, he helped his co-workers escape the ill-fated South Tower. Mark was a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Church and former member of the Holy Name Society.
Perhaps Mark's greatest accomplishment was his relationship with Denise, whom he met when he was just 16 years-old. Mark enjoyed his annual vacations to LBI with family and friends, where he would go to Irish Night and enjoyed singing Irish songs especially "Sweet Caroline." His other loves included all things New York, like the Giants, Mets and Rangers.
The services will be held at Casey Funeral Home on Slosson Avenue on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Mass is 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
