Marie Mercogliano

Marie Mercogliano (nee Colarusso), of Great Kills, New York passed away on April 13, 2020. Marie’s time on this earth ended peacefully, when The Lord Jesus took her in her sleep, at the Golden Gate Senior Rehabilitation and Health Center, on Staten Island. Dedicated and caring staff were at her side.

Marie is survived by: her loving sister Millie Monteforte (nee Colarusso), adored children, daughter Maryann Morelli (nee Mercogliano) and son Anthony, a retired member of the NYPD, cherished grandchildren, Joseph Morelli and Anthony Morelli, loving in-laws, son in-law Joseph Morelli, daughter in-law Toni Ann Mercogliano (nee Marra), granddaughter in-law Fatos Morelli (nee Emeksiz), and many loving nieces and nephews, as well as grandnieces and nephews.

Marie was born in Williamsburg Brooklyn on May 30, 1935 to Anthony and Rose Colarusso (nee Guadagno). She attended Eastern District High School, before marrying her loving husband Anthony Mercogliano, a decorated Korean War veteran, on October 5, 1952. Marie and Anthony continued to reside in Williamsburg Brooklyn, where Marie worked many years as a bookkeeper, while her husband started and operated a small construction company. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Marie and her now growing family settled in Jackson Heights, Queens. In her new surroundings Marie became very engaged in her local parish as well as community associations. Her vigor for civic engagement led to her serving as a State Committee Woman and a run for NYS Assembly in 1973. As her children grew, Marie re-entered the workforce as a betting agent for NYC Office Track Betting. Marie thoroughly enjoyed her tenure at OTB and was a favorite among clients at her local branch.

After retiring from OTB, Marie dedicated her time to her loving grandchildren, who she greatly adored. She also went back to her roots, volunteering at her parish and serving as a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) instructor. Where again, due to her engaging personality; she was a favorite of students, staff and parents alike. Marie enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City, as well as Las Vegas and Florida. She was a vibrant, articulate and extremely social woman with a very sharp wit. Marie was a devout Catholic, with the utmost faith in God. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who came to know her.

In light of recent events, a Memorial Mass to celebrate Marie’s life will take place in the near future, on a date, time and location, to be determined.
