Born June 19, 1954 in Caracas, Venezuela, she was the daughter of the late Leonardo Salerno and Carolina Salerno. When she was eight years old, her family moved back to their hometown of Palermo, Italy (Sicily). As a young adult, Maria became a very talented seamstress in Palermo. In 1979, she officially moved to the United States eventually settling in Staten Island and was proud to become a U.S. citizen several years ago. For the past 17 years Maria worked for JCPenney as a Window Coverings Expert assisting the Staten Island community with her meticulous sense of interior decorating skills and eye for design. She was patient, determined, and diligent in every aspect of her life. Maria enjoyed cooking, baking, crafting, gardening, and spending time with her loved ones creating now-treasured memories.
Maria dedicated the majority of her adult life to raising her daughter as a single parent, and did so with immense courage, strength, and grace. Her daughter will always be her best friend and other half. Their unique bond and unconditional love for one another was visible to everyone who witnessed their one of a kind relationship. Her daughter attributes all of her success, faith, strength, and being to her selfless Mother who will be dearly missed each day, until they are once again united at the gates of Heaven.
Maria is survived by her only daughter, Mariacarla Perrone, their beloved puppy Holly, her mother Carolina Salerno, her four siblings Antonino Salerno, Rosalia Salerno, Sergio Salerno, and Giovanni Salerno, as well as eight nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and nephews.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing protocol Maria’s family will be arranging a Memorial Mass for extended family and friends to pay their respects at a later date once NYS has lifted its “pause.” Details to be announced.
